Micellar Water: The perfect addition to your skincare routine?

Talking about Micellar water without sharing its origin story would be disingenuous of us, as it has revolutionized the beauty industry. Parisians were the first to develop micellar water owing to the city’s harsh waters which easily caused breakouts and other skin problems.

Micellar water was intended to clean the skin without the need for rinsing, however, has since become a key beauty product in face prep and makeup removal (particularly for removing waterproof makeup in one quick swipe). Just as convenient as a face wipe (although way friendlier on your skin and the environment), micellar water fast became the premier addition to an incredible skincare routine.

So, what exactly is micellar water? And is it good for our skin, particularly in the long term? We conducted research and spoke with numerous experts to provide you with all of the information you will require.

What is Micellar Water, and How Does it Work?

Micellar Water is a blend of purified water, hydrating ingredients such as glycerine, and micelles (mild surfactants/soaps). Micelles act like magnets, lifting out makeup, dirt, oil, and impurities from the skin. According to dermatologists, the gentle cleansing effect of the micelles can be effective in preventing breakouts and treating acne as it clears the pores aiding in the healthy release of sebum (the skin’s natural moisturizer). The clearing of pores, healthy production of sebum, and hydrating ingredients in the micellar water results in hydrated, moisturized, and healthy skin.

Not all Micellar Waters are created equally

Although micellar water can be good for your skin, look out for ingredients used in the formulation as these determine how sensitive and gentle it is on the skin compared to cleansers. Watch out for the addition of alcohols, parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, and dyes. It’s important to note that some micellar waters cannot remove waterproof makeup and may require multiple wipes or rubs which may be irritating to the skin causing breakouts.

What makes it different from cleansers, and why should you use it?

Micellar water slightly differs from traditional facial cleansers as it removes surface impurities, makeup, and oils without comprising the skin’s barrier. Unlike cleansers, micellar water (formulated with soft water) does not require rinsing therefore eliminates the need for hard water (tap water) which strips away natural moisture from the skin resulting in clogged pores, acne and eczema. Maintaining the skin’s barrier is essential particularly for those with sensitive skin, therefore using micellar water not only has a cleansing effect but also moisturizes the skin resulting in a low risk of irritation.
